How sharing works

If you make use of our Software as a Service (SaaS) Cloud IoT Platform the following applies:

1. The Platform is multi-tenanted meaning your data is stored in the same database as all other users of the Platform.

2. Your data is only accessible to who it is shared with by making use of our sharing rules. This applies to devices, mimics and reports. When a device is added onto the Platform, the person who added it is identified as the “owner”. The owner can then share the device with other users who are registered on the Platform or share with a “group” consisting of multiple users. Shared users are then able to view the device and its data. The same applies to mimics and reports. The owner can give ownership to another shared user but the user has to have admin privileges. Users with admin privileges are also able to share devices, mimics and report.

3. When sharing there are three options:

   1. The item (device/mimic/report) can be made private or public. The default is private. When private the item can only be accessed by who it is shared with. When made public, all users on the Platform have read-only access unless a user is specifically shared with higher privileges.

   2. The item can be set to shared “in-organization only” or “any”. When shared in-organization only, the item can only be shared with users of the same domain as the owners domain. For example if shane@bitid.co.za is the owner then only users with @bitid.co.za can be shared.

   3. Sharing has five access levels

      1. read-only (default)

      2. write-only

      3. read-write

      4. admin

      5. Owner

Only users with admin rights can make changes to devices, mimics and report that they are shared with.

You are able to host your own instance of our IoT Platform in a data-centre of your choice. We do the set-up and management of the Platform.
